PETS

Pets must be trained and fed, and some pets are more difficult to train than others.  Below are the pets currently available, in order of least difficulty to most.

wolf (common)
owlbear
griffin
dragonling (rare)

Commands for pets are.....

WHISTLE WOLF - calls your pet to you.
TELL WOLF TO DEPART - used to make your pet leave you temporarily
TELL WOLF TO PERFORM - makes him do a trick!
TELL WOLF TO FIND <person> - used to locate another player.
FEED <food> TO WOLF - to feed him
TELL WOLF TO LEAVE FOREVER - to permanently lose your pet.  It's sad.

You can also show affection to your pet.  When you do this you learn Animal Empathy. Try pet, rub, tickle, kiss, smooch and hug.

To train your pet, start by telling him to depart.  He will probably blink at you, and he won't go anywhere, but you'll find you've learned something about the Handle Animal Skill.  Keep trying, and eventually he'll get the hint and he'll depart.  After he's mastered this command, train him to perform.  Finally, train him to find people.

I'm not sure how feeding works.  Originally I understood it to be connected with the animal empathy skill, but handle animal seems to be a factor.  Maybe it's both.  It seems to fall in between departing and performing.
Thanks to Keaira for assistance with this chart.

When you look at your pet, you will see something like this:

This is your animal companion.
It seems like it is in perfect health.
It appears to be in an irritated mood at the moment.
It looks like it is well fed.
In general, it looks like it is very happy.

This is how it breaks down.....

First line: just indicates whether or not this companion is yours.
Second line: indication of general health (hit points)
Third line: indication of mood (based on personality, health, happiness, and hunger)
Fourth line: indication of hunger
Fifth line: indication of happiness

Food for pets can be found by hunting black and scorch beetles, giant spiders and hell hounds.  Below is a list of what food you'll need for the different types of pets.

Wolf: a raw hellhound steak
Owlbear:  some hairy spider legs
Griffin: a raw hellhound steak
Dragonling:  a cracked beetle chitin
