IMBUE and INFUSE

Certain gems can be imbued with magical properties, and then can be infused into suitable items which then take on those properties.  There are several steps to the process:

First the gem must be refined.  This is accomplished by cutting the gem with gemcutting tools.  Jewelry Crafting skill is required for this step.  See TRADE SKILLS for more information on Jewelry Crafting.

After the gem is refined, it must be imbued.  All prestige classes except Thief are able to imbue gems.  Each guild has its own selection of gems with which to work.  See the chart below for the specific gems and guilds.  To imbue a gem, hold it in your hand and IMBUE <GEM TYPE>.  Success depends on level, guild, skill with magical devices, and the difficulty of the gem attempted.  When a gem is successfully imbued, it will change into another item, which is dependant on guild.

Having imbued the gem, and created the new magical item, you can now attempt to infuse it with another item.  Any imbued item can be infused with any infusable item (providing there are slots available) with the exception of a few which can only be used with weapons.  To accomplish this step, hold both items in your hands and INFUSE <ITEM>.  Infusable items can be found on creatures, or forged.  Forged items must be of perfect quality to be infusable and will have one slot.  Found items may have one to three slots.  No more than one of the same gem/guild type can be used on items with multiple slots.

05-23-2006  you can now RUB some imbued resources (the ones that can add weapon damage and minor spell protection) to grant temporary magic shields.  This applies to most of the Wizard-imbued items, but other classes have similar imbues.  The shields last for five minutes or for the first time you would be damaged by that type of attack and the degree of protection is exceptionally high.
