CARVING

To begin carving you will need to forage a branch.  Some types of branches available are cedar, cherrywood, driftwood, fir, mahogany, maple, oak, pine, spruce, teak and willow.  Palm fronds can also be foraged and carved.

There are many items that can be carved from branches.  The easiest is the vial.  With a carving knife in your right hand and a branch in your left, CARVE BRANCH INTO VIAL.  Other items that you can carve include the anklet, box, bowl, bracelet, clogs, cross, necklace, pipe, ring and sheath.  There are also many animal toys that can be carved.  These are the bat, bear, cow, dog, dove, dragon, eagle, elephant, ferret, fox, frog, griffin, gryfalcon, hawk, horse, jackal, kitten, lion, lynx, monkey, mouse, nightingale, owl,  panther, phoenix, rabbit, ram, rat, shark, snake, snipe, spider, stag, swan, tiger, turtle, unicorn, whale, wolf, and the wolverine.  You may also learn carving while practicing Armorsmithing (bracers, mask and shield), Bowyering (arrows) or Weaponsmithing (cane, club, dagger, staff and sword).  For more information regarding difficulty, read Gorm on Carving, or see the chart below.

The chart lists the lowest rank at which I have successfully carved each item since I started paying attention (with several characters).  Your results may be different, but this list can be helpful as a guildline.
